In a career that has extended over forty years, Anupam Kher Has brought life an extraordinary range of characters on the screen. Known to constantly drive their boundaries, the actor has never hesitated to take on roles that test his crafts. Among his many memorable performances, Kher says the most demanding were they Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh – Both as he portrayed with remarkable authenticity. His upcoming portrayal of Rabindranath Tagore Is not yet to release, but if his previous work is any indication, the audience can expect another powerful performance. When he spoke to Ani, Kher opened about the challenges behind these transformations. “Making the characters in Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Dr. Manmohan Singh and Mahatma Gandhi was extremely difficult. Among them, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s depiction showed to be the most difficult. With Gurudev Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi, we have many references in the form of archive films, photographs and even films that help capture their essence. Their personalities belong to a bygone era, before and after independence, often seen in black and white, ”he explained.
He added playing Dr. Singh came up with his own unique difficulties. “But Dr. Manmohan Singh is different … He is someone we have seen in our own time, on TV, in news clips and spoke. He had very mild ways. The voice was mild. And the whole person was difficult. And it was on one edge. The character was on the edge of the leaf,” recalled Kher.To get every detail right, Kher said he spent months studying and repeating Singh’s way. “I repeated for 5-6 months with his way. How he sits, how he goes. And when we shot in England, the first day, I repeated to climb and go down the stairs. So someone shot a video. And he uploaded it. It went viral. Many did not know. It was in London’s interior, outside a house in a village, “he shared with a smile.Kher also recalled for an easier moment when his preparation paid off in an unexpected way. “The biggest thing was that his voice had a certain style. And then it was very important. So I made a joke with my friend. So I called him in his voice … My friend in Delhi almost thought that … and that was my real test, “he said, laughing. On Thursday, the veteran actor took to Instagram to share a collage of himself like Tagore, Gandhi and Manmohan Singh and celebrated their journey through these historical characters. “Three characters – an actor! Sometimes you have to continue to make yourself and some other people realize your value! Sounds good! All hail,” he wrote the post.
