The legendary classic singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra left this world at the age of 89 on Thursday morning in Mirzapur. Known for his enchanting Purab Ang Thumri, he had struggled with health problems after suffering a minor heart attack. A recipient of the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, his famous career extended over many decades and received him awards both nationally and internationally.

Pandit Chhannulal Mishra passed away at the age of 89 on Thursday morning (October 2). According to reports, Maestro took his last breath at 04:15 on her daughter Namrata’s residence in Mirzapur’s Gangadarshan -colony. Pandit Chhannulal Mishra is known for his soulful reproduction and also for his mastery over the Thumri Set.

Health struggle and last moments

As reported by Ani, Pandit Chhannulal Mishra had been unhealthy for some time. He was recently admitted to hospital after a minor heart attack. After his recovery, he returned home to Mirzapur, where he was under the care of doctors at Ramakrishna Mission Hospital. His late rituals will be presented with full state award at Manikarnika Ghat on Thursday evening.

A musical journey that extends over decades

Pandit Mishra was born on August 3, 1936 in a village in the Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh. Pandit Mishra received her early education from his father. This was him before he conducted formal education in Varanasi. He further attached his craft under Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan from Kirana Gharana. He has earned both national and international praise. His interpretation of Purab Ang Thumri was generally celebrated.Pandit Mishra received many awards, including Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Naushad Award and Yash Bharati Award.India’s government honored him with Padma Bhushan 2010 and Padma Vibhushan 2020. He was also recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi scholarship.
